Sand dollars are classified as irregular echinoids. They are adapted for burrowing in sand. Unlike sea urchins, their tests are covered with many small spines that are used for locomotion and to keep sediment off the body surface. The typical sand dollar has a flattened circular body. Sand dollars are selective deposit feeders which means that they feed on the organic material in the sand that they burrow in.
