Tubeworms are an example of sedentary polychaetes. They cannot leave their tube and only project their head from the opening. They construct their tubes from a variety of materials. Some species sort sand grains from food particles that they trap and use the sand to enlarge their tubes. Tubes are made of proteins and often feel like stiff parchment paper. Others could be made of calcium carbonate, stone, or coral.
