The Class Rhizopodea is mainly comprised of the organisms known as foraminiferans (forams for short). These are amoeboid protozoans that have branched pseudopods that form very intricate/elaborate, net-like structures known as reticulopods. Reticulopods are usually used to capture prey. Additionally, forams have tests which is simply the external skeleton. Forams consume large quantities of diatoms and bacteria while others harbor green and red algae, as well as zooxanthellae or dinoflagellates. The algae and zooxanthellae provide nutrients to their host and usually play roles in coral building. These organisms often resemble snail shells because as they grow, they accumulate more chambers to their test. The chambers usually form in spirals or rows which gives them the appearance of a shell.
